True Conversion: What’s Wrong with Everybody? | John MacArthur (Video)

Note: This is truly one of the most important sermons that I’ve come across from a modern pastor/preacher. Election, predestination, righteousness imputed, sovereign grace, etc., are all absolutely blessed doctrines. However, this type of message (or warning) is no less important, seeing that it identifies the scriptural evidences of true spiritual life, and true spiritual conversion in light of life. It goes to the very heart of what it means to be a “new creature in Christ.” It is an excellent aid to such commands/exhortations/admonishments as:

2 Corinthians 13:5Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”

2 Peter 1:10 “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity (i.e., agapē/love). 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make [you that ye shall] neither [be] barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”

2 Peter 3:17-18 “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know [these things] before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 18 But grow in grace, and [in] the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and for ever. Amen.”

1 John 3:18-24 “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. 20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, [then] have we confidence toward God. 22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as [kathōs, G2531, “even/according/just as, since, seeing that, after that, how, agreeably to the fact that”] HE GAVE US COMMANDMENT [singular]. 24 And he that keepeth his commandments [PLURAL] dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.”

2 Timothy 2:19-22 “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, [and] prepared unto every good work. 22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

Finally, if as with me, God reveals to you how woefully far short you fall of His standard and expectation for ALL TRUE CHRISTIANS, thank Him! (thank Him for not leaving you in your loathsome condition), and pray for His grace, strength, and mercy to work in you that which is good and pleasing in His sight.

To God be the glory,

Amen
