Yet I Must Be Branded As Being A Man
That Is An Enemy To Charity
John Warburton was a blessed Strict and Particular Baptist minister and the author of Mercies of a Covenant God: The Life of John Warburton, written between 1837 and 1838. In this work, the following quote can be found concerning Arians/Socians, Arminians/Semipelagians, and Calminians/Spurgeonists (emphasis added via bolded text):
“I could then look back and see all the way the Lord had led me, and was confident it was the right way to a city of habitation; so that I am a pauper upon charity for everything temporal or spiritual, for time and for eternity. And I do, and am constantly maintaining, both privately and publicly, as far as ever the Lord has enabled me, the wonders, the glories, the beauties and preciousness of charity; and yet I must be branded as being a man that is an enemy to charity. But, if by charity these people mean that I ought to unite with Arians and Socinians, who deny the Deity of my God and Saviour, whom I have proved again and again in my very soul that he is the mighty God, the everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace; if by charity they mean that I ought to meet and unite occasionally with people that can testify and say without a blush that election is a damnable doctrine, and they hate it in their hearts; that imputed righteousness is “imputed nonsense,” and a doctrine that ought to be abhorred and spurned by all, which is the very garment and covering that hides all my shame, the very robe that adorns my naked soul, and so very many times has been the joy and rejoicing of my heart, and which I have found to be so many times the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; if they mean by charity that I ought to unite with people that can say and testify that we may be a child of God one day, and a child of the devil another; that Christ died and atoned for the sins of Esau as well as of Jacob, for Cain as well as for Abel, for Judas as well as for Peter, and that there are thousands in hell for whom Christ died; if they mean by charity that I ought to unite and call those brethren who profess to believe in the doctrines of grace, and call themselves Calvinists, but can declare at times that those blessed doctrines which are so precious and glorious to my soul are non-essential things; that is, if I understand their meaning right, they view them as useless things, and that it is of no consequence whatever whether we receive or believe these doctrines or not, provided we do but unite with all sorts, and pray for all, and be candid, and mild, and esteem all as partakers of grace; I confess from my heart, if all this be charity, I am destitute of it, and instead of being grieved for my want of it, I glory in it.
I do not indeed feel the least ill-will against any of their persons, as the creatures of God, nor do I desire to do them the least injury, but those principles that debase free and sovereign grace, and exalt the creature, I hate and abhor. For how can two walk together except they be agreed? My soul has bought truth too dearly to part with it for such empty baubles as the praises and smiles of men; and those professors that love the smiles of men more than the truth of God, they are heartily welcome to them. I do not begrudge them. But notwithstanding all that ever these reporters could report, God stood by me, a poor worm, and gave such testimony to the word of grace, that neither men nor devils could overthrow it. I believe they tried with all their might to do so; but God hath said it, and I know it will stand, for I have proved it again and again: “My word shall go forth; it shall prosper in the thing whereunto I have sent it; it shall not return unto me void.”
The above represents my views on the matter nigh perfectly. My desire is to have my mind thoroughly focused on Christ, His word, and His people (unto our mutual edification and comfort, Lord willing). My desire is not to be out there constantly pointing out and battling heresies and heretics (real or supposed). Nonetheless, I cannot rightly claim to have an eye single on Christ, whilst simultaneously calling those who deny Him my brothers and sisters in Him. I do not worship the Arian/Socinian god and christ; I do not worship the Arminian/Semipelagian god and christ, and I do not worship the Sacramentalist/Romanist/Pseudo-Orthodox god and christ; I worship the biblical God and Christ through His effectual will and working alone. The ‘gospel’ associated with these other groups are clearly another gospel, and thus, they are no gospel at all; rather than being good news and glad tidings, they are an abomination to all who know and desire after the Truth.
As I recently stated in another forum, my insistence on (a) adhering to the Truth and (b) disdaining the false, is not out of mere academic concern; it is not simply philosophical in nature (though it does pertain to the love of true Wisdom), nor is it merely a matter of intellectual curiosity or debate. Seeing that both in His word and in my experience, I have been brought to know and love the Truth (being led to see how utterly unrighteous I am by nature, how utterly righteous and just He is by nature, how deserving of Hell I am, and how no ounce of my creature will and works could do anything to bring me closer to God, or to bring God closer to me, but that all Hope must rest in Christ and in His finished work alone), how can I then proceed to knowingly walk with those who not only deny this great Truth but revile Him, call Him worse than the devil, or a monster, due to His sovereign election and predestination of those whom He has chosen in Christ from before the world was? Moreover, how can I walk with those who would claim to believe the same Gospel that I believe, and yet embrace those who hate and despise the true God, Christ, and Gospel? It is madness to do so. Therefore, I reject these great errors not out of pride, nor out of a desire for attention or contention, nor to divide and conquer the true Church of the Living God (as has recently been asserted); no, I reject these errors because of the reality that true religion was, by God alone, worked in me and revealed to me, in light of the finished work of Christ on the cross, as witnessed to me by those proclaiming the true Gospel (and not some will-worshiping counterfeit), and brought home to my quickened soul, with power, by the Holy Spirit of God.
Some may ask the question, is this really an issue? Do Arminians really hate the true God, His Christ, and His Gospel? My continued experience is that they do; they may vary in degrees of manifest malevolence, but their heart is such that they do not want to love, serve, or worship a God who is sovereign over all things, including and especially, the salvation of Hell-deserving souls. If anyone doubts the extent of this reality, try this: (1) quote relevant Gospel passages (Ephesians chapters one and two; Romans three and nine; etc.) and then (2) simply ask the question on any forum or board wherein Arminians dwell, in light of said passages, “what do you think of a God who loves only His elect, purposed to save only His elect, and sent His Son to die only for the elect.” I would encourage you to really and truly pose this question, except, I know that many would blaspheme in their responses and do not want to provide such an opportunity. Nonetheless, I have posed such questions (even recently) and know the general response; it reads something like the following….
II. SOME NEEDFUL QUOTES [EXAMPLES]
A. On August 26, 2015 I came across the following statement in response to a discussion several of the brethren were having with Arminians (emphasis added):
“I choose not to believe in a God who has already predestined one of my sons to Hell. That my friend is a Monster not a God of love, and I would never serve a God like that!!!!!“
B. This is precisely the same sentiment expressed by John Wesley, the Prince of Arminians, as titled by Charles Spurgeon, the very man whom Spurgeon had this to say concerning (again, emphasis added):
There is no soul living who holds more firmly to the doctrines of grace than I do, and if any man asks me whether I am ashamed to be called a Calvinist, I answer—I wish to be called nothing but a Christian; but if you ask me, do I hold the doctrinal views which were held by John Calvin, I reply, I do in the main hold them, and rejoice to avow it. But far be it from me even to imagine that Zion contains none but Calvinistic Christians within her walls, or that there are none saved who do not hold our views. Most atrocious things have been spoken about the character and spiritual condition of John Wesley, the modern prince of Arminians. I can only say concerning him that, while I detest many of the doctrines which he preached, yet for the man himself I have a reverence second to no Wesleyan; and if there were wanted two apostles to be added to the number of the twelve, I do not believe that there could be found two men more fit to be so added than George Whitefield and John Wesley. The character of John Wesley stands beyond all imputation for self-sacrifice, zeal, holiness, and communion with God; he lived far above the ordinary level of common Christians, and was one “of whom the world was not worthy.” I believe there are multitudes of men who cannot see these truths, or, at least, cannot see them in the way in which we put them, who nevertheless have received Christ as their Saviour, and are as dear to the heart of the God of grace as the soundest Calvinist in or out of Heaven.
C. We call Calminians Spurgeonists because men like Spurgeon clearly, knowingly, and unrepentantly speak spiritual peace to those who make such statements as the following (from John Wesley’s notoriously repulsive sermon titled Free Grace, which was sermon number One Hundred Twenty-Eight, preached in Bristol (UK) in 1740 A.D. (emphasis added):
Thus manifestly does this doctrine tend to overthrow the whole Christian Revelation, by making it contradict itself; by giving such an interpretation of some texts, as flatly contradicts all the other texts, and indeed the whole scope and tenor of Scripture; — an abundant proof that it is not of God. But neither is this all: For, Seventhly, it is a doctrine full of blasphemy; of such blasphemy as I should dread to mention, but that the honour of our gracious God, and the cause of his truth, will not suffer me to be silent. In the cause of God, then, and from a sincere concern for the glory of his great name, I will mention a few of the horrible blasphemies contained in this horrible doctrine. But first, I must warn every one of you that hears, as ye will answer it at the great day, not to charge me (as some have done) with blaspheming, because I mention the blasphemy of others. And the more you are grieve with them that do thus blaspheme, see that ye “confirm your love towards them: the more, and that your heart’s desire, and continual prayer to God, be, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do!”
1. This premised, let it be observed, that this doctrine represents our blessed Lord, “Jesus Christ the righteous,” “the only begotten Son of the Father, full of grace and truth,” as an hypocrite, a deceiver of the people, a man void of common sincerity. For it cannot be denied, that he everywhere speaks as if he was willing that all men should be saved. Therefore, to say he was not willing that all men should be saved, is to represent him as a mere hypocrite and dissembler. It cannot be denied that the gracious words which came out of his mouth are full of invitations to all sinners. To say, then, he did not intend to save all sinners, is to represent him as a gross deceiver of the people. You cannot deny that he says, “Come unto me, all ye that are weary and heavy laden.” If, then, you say he calls those that cannot come; those whom he knows to be unable to come; those whom he can make able to come, but will not; how is it possible to describe greater insincerity? You represent him as mocking his helpless creatures, by offering what he never intends to give. You describe him as saying one thing, and meaning another; as pretending the love which his had not. Him, in “whose mouth was no guile,” you make full of deceit, void of common sincerity; — then especially, when, drawing nigh the city, He wept over it, and said, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, — and ye would not…” Now, if you say, they would, but he would not, you represent him (which who could hear?) as weeping crocodiles’ tears; weeping over the prey which himself had doomed to destruction!
2. Such blasphemy this, as one would think might make the ears of a Christian to tingle! But there is yet more behind; for just as it honours the Son, so doth this doctrine honour the Father. It destroys all his attributes at once: It overturns both his justice, mercy, and truth; yea, it represents the most holy God as worse than the devil, as both more false, more cruel, and more unjust. More false; because the devil, liar as he is, hath never said, “He willeth all men to be saved:” More unjust; because the devil cannot, if he would, be guilty of such injustice as you ascribe to God, when you say that God condemned millions of souls to everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels, for continuing in sin, which, for want of that grace he will not give them, they cannot avoid: And more cruel; because that unhappy spirit “seeketh rest and findeth none;” so that his own restless misery is a kind of temptation to him to tempt others. But God resteth in his high and holy place; so that to suppose him, of his own mere motion, of his pure will and pleasure, happy as he is, to doom his creatures, whether they will or no, to endless misery, is to impute such cruelty to him as we cannot impute even to the great enemy of God and man. It is to represent the high God (he that hath ears to hear let him hear!) as more cruel, false, and unjust than the devil!
3. This is the blasphemy clearly contained in the horrible decree of predestination! And here I fix my foot. On this I join issue with every assertor of it. You represent God as worse than the devil; more false, more cruel, more unjust. But you say you will prove it by scripture. Hold! What will you prove by Scripture? That God is worse than the devil? It cannot be. Whatever that Scripture proves, it never proved this; whatever its true meaning be. This cannot be its true meaning. Do you ask, “What is its true meaning then?” If I say, ” I know not,” you have gained nothing; for there are many scriptures the true sense whereof neither you nor I shall know till death is swallowed up in victory. But this I know, better it were to say it had no sense, than to say it had such a sense as this. It cannot mean, whatever it mean besides, that the God of truth is a liar. Let it mean what it will, it cannot mean that the Judge of all the world is unjust. No scripture can mean that God is not love, or that his mercy is not over all his works; that is, whatever it prove beside, no scripture can prove predestination.
4. This is the blasphemy for which (however I love the persons who assert it) I abhor the doctrine of predestination, a doctrine, upon the supposition of which, if one could possibly suppose it for a moment, (call it election, reprobation, or what you please, for all comes to the same thing) one might say to our adversary, the devil, “Thou fool, why dost thou roar about any longer? Thy lying in wait for souls is as needless and useless as our preaching. Hearest thou not, that God hath taken thy work out of thy hands; and that he doeth it much more effectually? Thou, with all thy principalities and powers, canst only so assault that we may resist thee; but He can irresistibly destroy both body and soul in hell! Thou canst only entice; but his unchangeable decrees, to leave thousands of souls in death, compels them to continue in sin, till they drop into everlasting burnings. Thou temptest; He forceth us to be damned; for we cannot resist his will. Thou fool, why goest thou about any longer, seeking whom thou mayest devour? Hearest thou not that God is the devouring lion, the destroyer of souls, the murderer of men? Moloch caused only children to pass though the fire: and that fire was soon quenched; or, the corruptible body being consumed, its torment was at an end; but God, thou are told, by his eternal decree, fixed before they had done good or evil, causes, not only children of a span long, but the parents also, to pass through the fire of hell, the ‘fire which never shall be quenched; and the body which is cast thereinto, being now incorruptible and immortal, will be ever consuming and never consumed, but ‘the smoke of their torment,’ because it is God’s good pleasure, ‘ascendeth up for ever and ever.’”
D. Now what did the highly revered George Whitefield, in a letter to John Wesley (in direct response to the above sermon) say to his beloved friend and “brother in Christ?” Admittedly, he addressed the errors and blasphemies found in the sermon at issue; nonetheless, as a Spurgeonist himself, Mr. Whitefield ended his letter to his dear brother Wesley as follows:
Dear Sir, these things ought not so to be. God knows my heart, as I told you before, so I declare again, nothing but a single regard to the honour of Christ has forced this letter from me. I love and honour you for his sake; and when I come to judgment, will thank you before men and angels, for what you have, under God, done for my soul. There, I am persuaded, I shall see dear Mr. Wesley convinced of election and everlasting love. And it often fills me with pleasure to think how I shall behold you casting your crown down at the feet of the Lamb, and as it were filled with a holy blushing for opposing the divine sovereignty in the manner you have done. But I hope the Lord will show you this before you go hence. O how do I long for that day! If the Lord should be pleased to make use of this letter for that purpose, it would abundantly rejoice the heart of, dear and honoured Sir, Yours affectionate, though unworthy brother and servant in Christ, George Whitefield…
Though the above quote will no doubt sound humble, and loving, and “Christian,” to the multitudes who read it, in reality, it represents the very heart of compromise. George Whitefield not only read the very quotes from Wesley provided above, but responded directly to it, to Wesley himself, as is evidenced here: http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil/wesley.htm. I haven’t a single ounce of respect, reverence, or spiritual kinship with one, even though they be called a “Calvinist,” who can compromise the Gospel to the degree that this man (Whitefield) did, Spurgeon along with him, and countless other Calminians who love the praise of men more than the Gospel of the True and Living God, and the Christ and God it reveals (no matter how much they would mouth objections to the contrary).
E. Yet, even in our day, it is not just lay-Arminians but prominent “theologians” who mimick the sentiment and sin of John Wesley. Consider the words of Roger E. Olson, an “ordained (Arminian) Baptist minister,” Professor of Theology at George W. Truett Theological ‘Cemetery,’ in Baylor University, Waco, Texas, and a prolific author in the defense of Arminianism. In his 2011 work, Against Calvinism: Rescuing God’s Reputation from Radical Reformed Theology, he had this to say:
“In short, the Calvinist account of God’s sovereignty… inevitably makes God the author of sin, evil, and innocent suffering (such as the children of the Holocaust) and thereby impugns the integrity of God’s character as good and loving. The God of this Calvinism (as opposed to, say, revisionist Reformed theology) is at best morally ambiguous and at worst a moral monster hardly distinguishable from the devil…“
Irresistible grace does the same thing. It impugns the goodness of God… I acknowledge mystery in revelation, but not one that requires belief in a hidden or secret will of God that makes him a moral monster. Only a moral monster would refuse to save persons when salvation is absolutely unconditional and solely an act of God that does not depend on free will…
One day, at the end of a class session on Calvinism’s doctrine of God’s sovereignty, a student asked me a question I had put off considering. He asked: “If it was revealed to you in a way you couldn’t question or deny that the true God actually is as Calvinism says and rules as Calvinism affirms, would you still worship him?” I knew the only possible answer without a moment’s thought, even though I knew it would shock many people. I said no, that I would not because I could not. Such a God would be a moral monster…“
F. Yet, what would a typical, contemporary Calminian response to the above sound like?
1. In an article titled Do Roger Olson and I Worship the Same God? – one Calminian had this to say: “While the question of whether Osteen and I have the same God leaves me wondering, I don’t think the same about my view of God and Olson’s view of God. I believe our devotion and love is to the same God. So, I would like to pose this question once again. Does the distinctions in our definitions of God’s sovereignty warrant Olson’s provocation that maybe, just maybe, we worship different Gods? Does the differences in the way Arminians define sovereignty and how Calvinists define sovereignty cross the line in your opinion? Do you think that Olson’s rhetoric is responsible here? Let me say once again: though this is an important issue I bring up here, I have a great deal of respect for Roger Olson and pray that this does not come across as defensive or divisive. Even if he suggests that our Gods are different, I look forward to taking a class he may offer in glory!“
2. Another Calminian, in an article titled Against Calvinism 3 – Reformed Diversity, stated “I will make just one other observation, growing out of Roger’s assertion that all classical Arminians attribute “all the ‘work’ of salvation to God and none to human beings” (31). For this I am profoundly grateful, and it explains why I don’t view evangelical Arminianism to be a dangerous threat. I feel none of the passionate objection to Roger’s Arminianism that he feels to my Calvinism, and I have laboured alongside Arminians joyfully, in both church work and theological education. I want to comment, however, on the issue of entailment from theological affirmations.
3. Many, many more examples of Calminian/Spurgeonist compromise can be found throughout the Internet, in print, and in common discussion with many within Reformed, Calvinistic, Primitive Baptist, and even some Strict Baptist camps, and Sovereign Grace circles. To some, this spirit of compromise represents (there notion of) true, Christian charity humility, and kindness. To me, and to many others, such compromise is indicative of a most ungodly Syncretistic spirit, one that would seek to undermine the Truth of who God is, what He has done, what He said He will yet do, and all that encompasses the truly good news and glad tidings of Christ, Hos Kingdom, His people, and His finished work on the cross.
G. Consider also Eastern Orthodox theologian (so-called) and scholar, David Bentley Hart, in his 2005 work The Doors of the Sea (pertaining to God’s role in the great 2004 Indian ocean Tsunami) had this to say:
“If indeed there were a God whose true nature—whose justice or sovereignty—were revealed in the death of a child or the dereliction of a soul or a predestined hell, then it would be no great transgression to think of him as a kind of malevolent or contemptible demiurge, and to hate him, and to deny him worship, and to seek a better God than he.“
These are all examples of both the true, Arminian mindset (whether they realise it or not; for it goes to the very essence of how they view a sovereign God), and those Calminian compromisers who support them, encourage them, embrace them (as brethren in Christ), bidding them God speed contrary to 2 John 1:9-11 and the other passages provided below.
III. AN IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
However, my words are not designed to break the bruised reeds nor to quench the smoking flax seeing that God shall bring forth judgment unto Truth and send forth judgment unto victory through the Lord Jesus Christ and the truth of His word [Isaiah 42:3, Matthew 12:20]. We read in Romans 10:9-17,
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
God saves no one in conjunction with a false Gospel; you are no more going to be regenerated of God, let alone converted, in the midst of hearing a Talmudist, Mohammedan, Hindu, Buddhist, Shintoist, New Age, or Left-hand Path (Satanist, Druidic, Luciferian, Wiccan, Setian, O.T.O., etc.) message than you are under a Romanist, Arminian, Arian, Adventist, or related “sermon.” No professor of a false gospel, a false refuge, will be able to say “God used me to bring someone into His elect fold” – especially not through any message that yokes salvation with any exercise of the human will or effort. God uses His sent (faithful) preachers, teachers, and witnesses to lead lost sheep into the fold. I reject the notion that God would have us declare, “How beautiful are the feet of the John Wesleys of the world, the Billy Grahams, the Leonard Ravenhills, the A.W. Tozers, the Joel Osteens, the Dwight Moodys, the T.D. Jakes, the Joyce Meyers, the Eddie Longs, the Clepto Dollars, the Adrian Rogers, and all of the other such Arminians false prophets who preach, witnessing the gospel of another peace, and bringing ‘glad tidings’ of their corrupted will and works mixed with the works of their so-called christ!” God does not save people through such men; He does not use them to bring peace and comfort to His people – period.
Now, neophytes, looking for somewhere to go to learn more about Christ may happen upon such (false) churches for a season but their hearts will not be in it, yoked with it, they will not find peace and comfort therein; they will give no true spiritual amens to a message that focuses on their creature will and effort! They will seek a faithful place, a godly place, one where Christ and not human will or effort is exalted. So I have no doubt that, initially, many a new Christian will be caught in the midst of (physically found amongst) those who will prove to know nothing about Gospel truth. I am not targeting such in this article. God warns to come out of such places because He knows that some of His own will tarry in their longer than they ought (for we ought to leave immediately). There would be no exhortation to come out if some were not still therein. So, it is not the neophyte that I speak against but those who after the first and second admonition, after much exhortation to soul-searching (if Christ and the work of the Spirit be in them, showing them their wretched state by nature, their total inability, and their utter hopelessness outside of a sovereign, all-sufficient God) in the light of the whole counsel of God, as found in the Holy Bible. But for any who remain unrepentant in their vital, grievous error, I see no cause to walk with them or to call them my brothers or sisters in Christ — to do so would be to dishonour my Lord and Saviour. Thus, I have no brethren in Christ who are active Arminians, Romanists, Arians (e.g. JWs-so called), or even Calminians/Spurgeonists, although I absolutely have brethren in Christ who were such things — but the Goodness of God, and the Gift of God, effectually called them out of such damnable error through His Holy Spirit, delivering them from said errors, and causing them to love, acknowledge, and confess the Truth. So please, do not fall for the false argument that I am condemning all who are deemed in these false places due to their geographic position; no! I am against those whose heart, will, and mind, say amen to will-worship, defend such heresy, promote it unto the destruction of others, and I am against those who speak spiritual peace (giving false refuge) to those who do such things (seeing that they are partaker in their evil deeds).
IV. IMPORTANT SCRIPTURAL PASSAGES ON THE MATTER AS PROOF-TEXTS
A. THE DANGER OF FALSE GOSPELS, THOSE THAT BRING THEM, AND THOSE THAT SPEAK SPIRITUAL PEACE TO THOSE WHO DO
Galatians 1:6-8 “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the Gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.“
Galatians 3:1-3 “O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the Truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?”
2 Peter 2:1-3 “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the Way of Truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.”
Ephesians 4:14-15 “That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the Truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the Head, [even] Christ…”
1 Corinthians 11:18-19 “For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.“
2 Timothy 4:1-5 “I charge [thee] therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
B. COMMANDS AND EXHORTATIONS TO BE SEPARATE FROM THEM AND NOT UNEQUALLY YOKED WITH THEM
2 John 1:9-11 “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the Doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the Doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into [your] house, neither bid him God speed: 11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.“
1 Timothy 5:17-22 “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer [is] worthy of his reward. 19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. 21 I charge [thee] before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. 22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.“
Revelations 18:4 “And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.”
Jeremiah 51:5-6 “For Israel [hath] not [been] forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel. 6 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this [is] the time of the LORD’S vengeance; He will render unto her a recompence.”
Psalm 106:34-36 “They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them: 35 But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works. 36 And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.”
Psalm 1:1 “Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the Temple of God with idols? for ye are the Temple of the Living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”
Titus 3:10-11 “A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.”
Romans 16:17-18 “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.”
2 Timothy 3:1-10 “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. 9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all [men], as theirs also was. 10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience…”
1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Philippians 3:1-3 “Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed [is] not grievous, but for you [it is] safe. 2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. 3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.“
Galatians 5:7-12 “Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? 8 This persuasion [cometh] not of Him that calleth you. 9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be. 11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased. 12 I would they were even cut off which trouble you.“
C. THE NATURE OF THEIR ERROR AND THE HARM THEY BRING
Ezekiel 13:8-23 “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I [am] against you, saith the Lord GOD. 9 And Mine Hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of My people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the House of Israel, neither shall they enter into the Land of Israel; and ye shall know that I [am] the Lord GOD. 10 Because, even because they have seduced My people, saying, Peace; and [there was] no peace; and one built up a wall, and, lo, others daubed it with untempered [morter]. 11 Say unto them which daub [it] with untempered [morter], that it shall fall: there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a stormy wind shall rend [it]. 12 Lo, when the wall is fallen, shall it not be said unto you, Where [is] the daubing wherewith ye have daubed [it]? 13 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even rend [it] with a stormy wind in My fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in Mine anger, and great hailstones in [My] fury to consume [it]. 14 So will I break down the wall that ye have daubed with untempered [morter], and bring it down to the ground, so that the foundation thereof shall be discovered, and it shall fall, and ye shall be consumed in the midst thereof: and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD. 15 Thus will I accomplish My wrath upon the wall, and upon them that have daubed it with untempered [morter], and will say unto you, The wall [is] no [more], neither they that daubed it; 16 [To wit], the prophets of Israel which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and [there is] no peace, saith the Lord GOD. 17 Likewise, thou son of man, set thy face against the daughters of thy people, which prophesy out of their own heart; and prophesy thou against them…
18 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the [women] that sew pillows to all armholes, and make kerchiefs upon the head of every stature to hunt souls! Will ye hunt the souls of My people, and will ye save the souls alive [that come] unto you? 19 And will ye pollute Me among My people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to My people that hear [your] lies? 20 Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I [am] against your pillows, wherewith ye there hunt the souls to make [them] fly, and I will tear them from your arms, and will let the souls go, even the souls that ye hunt to make [them] fly. 21 Your kerchiefs also will I tear, and deliver My people out of your hand, and they shall be no more in your hand to be hunted; and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD. 22 Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him Life: 23 Therefore ye shall see no more vanity, nor divine divinations: for I will deliver My people out of your hand: and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD.”Jeremiah 5:10-12 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they [are] not the LORD’S. 11 For the House of Israel and the House of Judah have dealt very treacherously against Me, saith the LORD. 12 They have belied the LORD, and said, [It is] not He; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
Jeremiah 6:13-15 “For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one [is] given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. 14 They have healed also the hurt [of the daughter ] of My people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when [there is] no peace. 15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time [that] I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.”
Jeremiah 8:11-12 “For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when [there is] no peace. 12 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.”
Jeremiah 14:13-16 “Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place. 14 Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in My Name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. 15 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in My Name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed. 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.”
Isaiah 48:22 “There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.”
Isaiah 57:21 “[There is] no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.“
Lamentations 2:14 “Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.”
Proverbs 14:15 “The simple believeth every word: but the prudent [man] looketh well to his going.”
Acts 17:10-11 “And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming [thither] went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.“
1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 “Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast [katechō] that which is good [but] abstain [apechomai / hold oneself off] from all appearance [forms/fashions] of [that which is] evil.“
Jeremiah 23:16-20 “Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, [and] not out of the Mouth of the LORD. 17 They say still unto them that despise Me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you. 18 For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard His word? who hath marked His word, and heard [it]? 19 Behold, a Whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous Whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. 20 The Anger of the LORD shall not return, until He have executed, and till He have performed the thoughts of His heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.“
Matthew 24:4-5 “And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5 For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.”
[Note: many will affirm with their mouths that one called The Lord Jesus is Christ but will deny Him in their hearts and minds as they despise Him, declaring that they will not serve, love, nor worship a Christ who did not die for all, did not give an “equal opportunity” to all to “get saved,” and who does not love all, or desire the salvation of all, desiring the salvation of His elect Body/Bride only.]
Matthew 7:15-16, 22-23 “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?… 22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy Name? and in Thy Name have cast out devils? and in Thy Name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.“
2 Peter 2:1 “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.”
Titus 1:7-16 “For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; 8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; 9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. 10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: 11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. 12 One of themselves, [even] a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians [are] alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. 13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; 14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. 15 Unto the pure all things [are] pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving [is] nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny [Him], being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
Micah 3:9-12 “Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the House of Jacob, and princes of the House of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity. 10 They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. 11 The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, [Is] not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us. 12 Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed [as] a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.
Despite my attempts to be as clear about my motives as possible, and as biblical concerning my rationale as possible, many will insist of making (their) beloved men and not godly principle the central focus. They will be so offended at the thought of their golden calves being spoken against, and identified for what they are, that they will utterly ignore the related Scriptural references and the supplied arguments that expound upon them. Many will simply reject the truth that a true, Gospel profession, having received a love for that Truth, dictates that the Christian avoid and refute compromise wherever it is found. The Arminian god (idol) is not my God and the Arminian christ (anti-christ) is not my Elder Brother; thus if I do not share the same Heavenly Father and Eldest Brother with the Arminian, how can I possibly call them my brethren in Christ? It would be both foolishness and madness to do so! Likewise, if some Spurgeonist can call an Arminian his brother or sister in Christ, that means that the Calminian acknowledges that they share the Arminian’s father and the Arminian’s elder brother, so it is only reasonable that they spiritually embrace, and thus spiritually speak peace to, those within their will-worshipping spiritual family. But how can I, wanting nothing to do with the Arminian false god and false christ, call someone a brother or sister in Christ who (though claiming to love free and sovereign grace) knowingly, and unrepentantly, yokes themselves together with Arminians and others who would make an idol out of their fallen will? How can the Calminian embrace two fathers and two eldest brothers? They cannot rightly do so, and they know this; therefore, they must argue that they are one and the same father and brother and not two separate sets. Those who love the True will cry “nonsense!” and will assert that their inability, the Calminian’s inability, to distinguish spiritual parents does not mean that those of us who can discern, and who do make the distinction, knowing our Heavenly Father, and our Eldest Brother (who is the Great Shepherd, and the sheep know, hear, and follow His Voice), are somehow less godly, or less charitable, because we do not hesitate to distinguish that which is of the True and Living God from that which belongs to idols (made from the corrupt human heart, will, and imagination). No, it is not the true Christian but the Calminian false prophet who is uncharitable, and ungodly, for as they go about declaring peace, peace where there clearly is no peace, they harden the unsaved in their evil way and make it easier for them to excuse both their error and their lack of repentance concerning it. They aid the lost sinner in clinging to a false refuge, one that not only cannot save them, but that will positively damn them if they are non-elect (for God will intervene for His own in due time, and turn them from their Hell-bound was). Therefore, woe indeed to the watchman who sees the sword coming, and blows not the trumpet, that the people be not warned; for if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will God require at the watchman’s hand! (Ezekiel 33:6).
To God alone be the glory, in Christ Jesus, Amen!
