Some brief thoughts concerning the source of faith…

The Source of Faith

The Bible declares that man must have faith to walk with God; consider, Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” In light of this, how does a person obtain faith; is it man-mustered? Is faith something that man must work-up in order to “get saved?” Or is faith the free and sovereign gift of God that the Father gives to His people, through the effectual working of the Holy Spirit, in light of the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross?  The verses below will make clear that faith is indeed a gift given by God specifically to His elect (as it in wrought in their hearts by His effectual working).

Passages that relate to faith…

John 6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent…44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day… 65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

Ephesians 2:1 And you [hath He quickened], who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform {perform: or, finish} [it] until the day of Jesus Christ:

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of [his] good pleasure.

Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author {author: or, beginner} and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

II Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: {God…: Gr. of our God and Saviour}

John 3:27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

[Note: this giving includes the giving of the gifts of spiritual hearing, understanding, believing (faith), repenting, and the exercising of the faith given to an elect saint]

I Corinthians 4:7 For who maketh thee to differ [from another]? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive [it], why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received [it]?

[Note: This receiving includes the ability to spiritually hear, understand, believe, repent, and exercise the faith given]

Philippians 1:29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

[Note: Yet again we see that it must be given to a person to believe, i.e. to have the spiritual ability to believe).

John 8:47 He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.

[Note: The elect of God are given and receive ears to hear by the effectual working of God because they are of God, having been chosen in God the Son before the foundation of the world – Ephesians 1:4).

John 12:37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: 38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with [their] eyes, nor understand with [their] heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

[Note: The elect of God are given eyes to see and ears to hear by the effectual working of God, but the reprobate are actively blinded and hardened in their sins because they are not of God, and were never chosen in God the Son before the foundation of the world).

John 6:45: It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

[Note: the ability to hear is in God’s hands; of many it can be said “….the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.” (Deuteronomy 29:4)].
